In and around Caledon Villa

CENTENARY

In 2010 the building of Caledon Villa celebrated its first centenary.

To celebrate this great occasion, the management invited no less than 8 different groups to enjoy and share their memories of this historic villa. Amongst these groups were

*  Descendants of the original owners – Koos and Lenie Krige.

*  Previous inhabitants of the house – owners and students.

*  Friends in the world of Music – living legends of composers and musicians.

*  Colleagues in the guest house industry.
 

At each event a booklet was compiled as a keepsake of the particular dinner.

One example for the Music evening is attached as Music Instruments. 

 URNS on the GABLES

August 2011 : Some time ago we discovered an old photo of Caledon Villa taken around 1940. This shows the two gables with decorative urns at specific points. But since then they have disappeared. Knowing that there was something in high places, we climbed on the roof and could clearly identify the footprints of the urns. This prompted us to replace them.

Knowing the right people is often a good thing. With an architect’s assistance we calculated the sizes and shapes of the original urns and then had them reproduced according to the design of urns placed on a historical building in Cape Town. (Burgerwacht Huis)

The end result is there to be enjoyed by the observant passerby from the street ….

SPRINGTIME on the ROOF

September 2011 : the first real Spring on the roof – colorful in a diversity of sizes and shapes as the succulents are gradually establishing themselves in their new environment.

VISITING EUROPE

August 2011 : Ode and Johan had the opportunity to travel to Europe. The main objective was to attend the Wagner opera Parsival in the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. For most music inclined persons this is a once in a lifetime experience. And it really lived up to all the expectations.

But it also gave us the opportunity to visit some guest house friends with whom we have shared many wonderful times. This visit included some good friends over many years [Gerda Strecke, Vera Tlusty, Jörg and Renate Feldmann, Helmut and Gertrud Schmidt] but also some more recent friends [Carla and Horst Burgmann, Helmut and Anne Merensky, Werner and Anja Hoffritz, Leo and Olga Buner]. They all opened their homes and hearts to us in a very special way. Thanks to all of them !

And by October 2011 the first of them will be joining us in Caledon Villa again !
